Special Features of a Hearing Aid

Hearing aids are all made with the same intent and purpose, to bring receive sound, amplify it, brings the amplified sound to the listener’s ear. They each have built in electronics to carry out these tasks. Hearing aids are equipped with miniature microphones and miniature loudspeakers, they are equipped to help a person with hearing loss participate in conversations and listen to sounds they couldn’t normally hear. Although all hearing aids have similar components, different types offer different features.

One special feature a hearing aid might have is a directional microphone. In a hearing aid such as this, there is a switch that is able to set the directional microphone in action, causing it to respond to sounds coming from a particular direction. When an individual is wearing a hearing aid with a directional microphone, when the microphone is set in motion, the individual will notice that any sounds coming from behind them is reduced.

Another special feature a hearing aid can have is a telephone switch. A hearing aid such as this is designed with an induction coil inside. When an individual is talking on the phone, in order to hear the other side of the conversation more clearly, they can switch from the normal setting to a setting for telephone. In a hearing aid that has a telephone switch, surrounding sounds are eliminated and the individual only picks up the sounds from the telephone. A hearing aid like this also eliminates the whistling noise that people often get when talking on the phone. The reason for this is that the hearing aid microphone is turned off. This telephone or `T` setting, is also useful in large areas such as theaters, auditoriums, churches, etc. These buildings must be equipped with induction loop or FM installations. In situations such as these, an individual is able to block out surrounding noise and have the hearing aid concentrate on the speaker’s voice.

A third feature a hearing aid could have is a direct audio input. These hearing aids have the capability to connect to a remote microphone or a FM assistive listening device. A hearing aid with direct audio input also allows an individual to connect to a TV or other devices like a computer, radio, CD player, etc.

A hearing aid is so much more advanced nowadays than fifty years ago. With ongoing research and testing, hearing aid technology will likely become even more advanced. The most positive result of hearing aid technology is the freedom and independence it offers adults and children with hearing loss.
